इस बार होली 18 मार्च को है। होली के एक दिन पहले होलिका दहन (17 march) होता है। (choti holi 2022) इसे मनाने के पीछे कई पौराणिक कथाएं प्रचलित हैं। तो चलिए जानते हैं होली क्यों मनाई जाती है।
पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार हिरण्यकशिपु प्राचीन भारत का एक राजा था जिसे ब्रम्हा जी से वरदान मिला था। ब्रम्हा जी से मिले इस वरदान के कारण हिरण्यकशिपु को घमंड हो गया और वो खुद को ही भगवान समझने लगा। बहुत सालों बाद हिरण्यकशिपु का एक बेटा पैदा हुआ जिसका नाम प्रहलाद था।
प्रहलाद भगवान विष्णु का परम भक्त था और वह भगवान विष्णु की पूजा और भक्ति में ही विलीन रहता था। हिरण्यकशिपु उसकी इस भक्ति से परेशान था क्योंकि वो भगवान विष्णु को अपना शत्रु मानता था। हिरण्यकशिपु ने कई बार प्रहलाद को भक्ति करने से रोका, लेकिन प्रहलाद नहीं माना।
इसी के चलते हिरण्यकशिपु ने प्रह्लाद को मारने का प्लान बनाया। हिरण्यकशिपु की एक बहन थी जिसका नाम होलिका था। होलिका को वरदान प्राप्त था कि उसको आग जला नहीं सकती। हिरण्यकशिपु ने अपनी बहन होलिका से कहा कि वो प्रहलाद को गोद में लेकर आग में बैठ जाए, इससे भक्त प्रहलाद की आग में जलकर मृत्यु हो जाएगी,

लेकिन जब होलिका की गोद में प्रहलाद बैठा तो भगवान विष्णु ने उन्हें सुरक्षा कवच प्रदान किया जिससे भक्त को कुछ नहीं हुआ, लेकिन होलिका जलकर राख हो गई। होलिका की ये हार बुराई के नष्ट होने का प्रतीक है इसलिए बुराई पर अच्छाई की जीत के लिए होलिका दहन किया जाता है।
होलिका के भस्म होने के बाद भगवान विष्णु ने हिरण्यकशिपु का वध कर दिया। इस तरह संसार से बुराई का नाश हुआ और अच्छाई की जीत हुई। इसी के चलते होली से एक दिन पहले होलिका जलाई जाती है,
2nd story : मान्यताओं के अनुसार भगवान कृष्ण ने जब जहर खाया था तो उनकी त्वचा गहरे नीले रंग की हो गई थी। अपने इस रंग को लेकर वो हमेशा ये सोचते थे कि क्या निष्पक्ष त्वचा वाली लड़कियां उन्हें पसंद करेंगी। एक दिन कृष्ण की माँ ने उन्हें राधा के पास जाने और अपनी पसंद के किसी भी रंग में रंगने के लिए कहा। कहते हैं बस तभी से रंगों के साथ होली का चंचल उत्सव कृष्ण और राधा के साथ मनाया जाने लगा।
ये कथा भी प्रचलित है कि इस दिन भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने इस पूतना नामक राक्षसी का वध किया था। इसी खु़शी में गोपियों और ग्वालों ने रासलीला की और रंग खेला था। तभी से रंगों वाली होली मनाई जाती है।

ये वैज्ञानिक कारण होलिका दहन की परंपरा से जुड़ा है। बसंत ऋतु के आगमन का यह महीना पर्यावरण और शरीर में बैक्टीरिया की वृद्धि को बढ़ा देता है, लेकिन जब होलिका जलाई जाती है तो उससे करीब 145 डिग्री फारेनहाइट तक तापमान बढ़ता है। होलिका से निकलता ये ताप शरीर और आसपास के पर्यावरण में मौजूद बैक्टीरिया को नष्ट कर देता है। इस प्रकार यह शरीर तथा पर्यावरण को स्वच्छ करता है।

Hiranyakashyap was very angry at the fact that his son didn’t worship him, king Hiranyakashyap asked his sister, demon Holika to sit in a pyre while holding his son. (Holika Dahan 2022) While sitting one fire, Holika died, but Prahlad was saved by Lord Vishnu, who later took the avatar of Narasimha- a half human and half lion and killed the demon king.

For the 9 days before the main festivities, children celebrated by singing folk songs, playing with Kolata sticks and collecting money, rice and wood. This celebration is worth watching.
West Bengal: It’s different names in different states. In West Bengal, the festival of Holi is better known as 'Dol Jatra' or 'Dol Purnima' and is celebrated with people placing the icons of Radha and Krishna on a palanquin. It is then paraded around the neighbourhood and honoured. People dance and sing as they carry the godly icons to celebrate the festival and receive the blessings of the gods.
Bihar: In Bihar, the day before Holi, the main festival, people light bonfires as an ode to the legend of Holika. The festival is called Phaguwa in the Bhojpuri dialect and the day preceding Holi is called Phalgun Poornima. As per tradition, people add cow dung cakes, wood from trees, grains from the new harvest to add to the bonfire. The next day wet Holi is played in the morning/afternoon after which Holi Milan is performed. Here people visit each other's houses and apply dry colours to each other's faces. Karnataka: Here the festival is again a two-day event with people collecting wood days before the festival and burning in on 'Kamadahana' night.
